A vacancy has arisen to join Billington Structures as Technical Director.
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Technical Director to join our team and lead our Design and Drawing Office operation.

Billington Structures is one of the UK’s leading structural steelwork specialists designing, manufacturing and constructing a wide portfolio of projects to a variety of clients, established for over 75 years with a professional and dynamic team.
Our experienced workforce can tackle projects from simple building frames to the most complex structures. With plants in Barnsley and Bristol, we have the capability to process 50,000 tonnes of steel per annum, and are able to service clients at locations throughout the UK and Europe.
The Role
As Technical Director, you will lead the Design and Drawing Office operation (Technical Team), ensuring the efficient use of technical resources.
You will provide strategic direction and oversight to the technical resource, ensuring alignment with the company’s wider objectives.
Main Duties
- Lead the conceptual design, detailed structural analysis, and member design of economic steel frames to relevant national, international, regulatory requirements such as CDM and company standards based on design performance data produced in-house or provided by others.
- Oversee the provision of connection design loads from analysis where connection design is to be carried out by others to allow timely completion.
- Ensure the working model is drawn and detailed in accordance with analysis and design assumptions and requirements.
- Conduct temporary stability assessments in accordance with the proposed sequence of erection. Design and check detailing of any temporary stability bracing or other requirements identified.
- Attend design team and design coordination meetings and manage associated communication as required to progress and obtain approval for a coordinated frame arrangement and design.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to the technical team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Engage with senior management to align technical resource strategies with broader company goals and objectives.
- Manage the internal technical team to ensure professional competences are maintained and developed to suit the broader company strategies, objectives, and project requirements.
- Research and oversee the implementation of new technologies, methodologies, systems, or new strategies to enhance efficiency and quality across the technical team.
- Manage the technical team to ensure that all design development and detailing activities are completed in a timely manner, within budgets, and to achieve planned production hours.
- Ensure that suitable external resources are available to complement the internal technical resource to cope with periods of work overload and ensure that issue to meet planned production hours can be achieved.
Experience / Qualifications
- An accredited MEng degree (or equivalent) in structural engineering or a related field.
- Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
