Kingsley Academy
Kingsley Academy in Hounslow, London is to be redeveloped with new buildings along with a new sports hall. The main contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland, were awarded the contract on behalf of the Department for Education will build a new main building at the rear of the site and a new sports hall at the front.
One of the challenges of the project is that the existing buildings would be in use while construction was being carried out on the new building. Access would be restricted to parts of the site for safety, but pupils and staff would using other parts during the day, and in the evening the community would also use the school.
Billington Structures will supply a 4-storey beam and column building as well as structural steelwork for the sports hall. The main four storey school block will be based on the DfE “superblock” design. This is where classrooms are arranged around a large central space on each floor, which can then be used for assembly halls, a school canteen or similar.
Pupil capacity at Kingsley Academy is between 1,000 and 1,400 pupils and it is expected that approximately 70% travel to school on foot and 20% by bus, with little car travel. During construction Bowmer and Kirkland will only need to remove a few parking spaces and these will be reinstated once the project was complete.
The new Kingsley Academy, with its new building and sports hall, will be more appropriate for the borough’s requirements for modern education facilities.
