Suthers School

Suthers School is a new secondary school and sixth form centre that is being built in Newark by Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd.  The £15 million project for Nova Education Trust and the Department for Education is designed for 830 pupils and it is being designed to focus on delivering a rich academic curriculum. This will include the best indoor learning environments with six science labs, and it will be complemented by two full size football pitches and two multi-use games areas.

Billington Structures supplied over 300 tonnes of structural steel for this project. The three story school will hold 600 secondary students and 230 sixth form pupils. The 7,2220 square metre building has a traditional department structure, which is focused around clustered hall spaces and centralised staff workrooms.

In addition, there will also be a sports facility, staff pastoral offices, a student support suite and a school library. The Suthers School will offer state of the art facilities to pupils in the Newark area. Finance for the new build has been provided by the Department for Education. Until the new site is ready, the school is based at a temporary site, in Bingham, which is also part of the same multi-academy trust.

Outdoor considerations on this project include a landscaped courtyard with a sheltered area so that students can still spend time outdoors when the weather is poor. There is also a kitchen garden, providing students with an opportunity to grow some food.

Environmental aspects of the design of the site are an eco-friendly water management system, with a green corridor of native species and British hedgerow and grasses to support local wildlife.

The completion of Suthers School will offer families in the Newark area greater choice of secondary school provision and it will be an exciting alternative that compliments other schools in the area.
