This week, from 10-16th February, is the National Apprenticeship Week. Throughout the year, the Billington Group of companies plays an active role in recruiting trainees and apprentices in order to develop the steel industry.
We actively look to recruit trainees and apprentices, across a range of departments and companies. From day one each apprentice at Billington is treated as an important part of the team and they receive support and mentoring.
Our goal is to support each individual in their chosen role and to develop them into an experienced professional with a long career. As well as offering them the opportunity to complete a formal qualification, there is also a tailored development plan. This includes placements in a number of departments, so that each apprentice gains an understanding of how the business works as a whole.
Billington Structures is proud to support BetterWeld’s apprentice programme which seeks to address a welding skill gap in the UK. The facility in South Yorkshire provides training in steel fabrication and welding with industry recognised qualifications. Our support means that in the future, businesses within the steel industry have access to candidates for apprenticeship and employment.
Claire Upperdine, Associate Director of HR at Billington Structures said “BetterWeld’s programme provides benefits for those seeking employment in South Yorkshire and their commitment aligns with our social values of contributing positively to the community.”
We also maintain close ties with education institutions, such as Barnsley College, and last year took part in the Barnsley Apprenticeship Live event. This gave the team an opportunity to talk to students about a wide range of careers, the qualifications and skills required, and provide them with insight into the steel industry. Three current Billington Structures apprentices were on hand and throughout the day they talked to students about their personal experiences. Many apprentices across the Billington Group go on to have long careers, with some having decades of experience within the company.
As part of the 2024-2025 Employer Audit Scheme, we are pleased to announce that Billington Holdings were awarded Gold Membership as a member of the 5% Club. It is an employer led movement in the UK where members aim to have at least 5% of their workforce in ‘earn and learn’ positions, which includes apprentices, sponsored students and graduates. More than 1,100 organisations across the UK have made a commitment to the 5% Club. Billington Holdings has been recognised for its commitment to provide career development opportunities by being awarded a Gold Membership.
As a company we believe that the success of any organisation relies on the skills and dedication of its people. We are committed to the long term growth and development of individuals and will continue to The recruitment and develop apprentices as it ultimately benefits the industry as a whole.
