Ealing Fields High School is located on a property that has a long and complicated history, which resulted in a complicated refurbishment project. This project for the Department for Education is part of a nationwide campaign of school improvements and the main contractor was Bowmer and Kirkland.
Ealing Fields High School is a site that evolved over hundreds of years. It was originally a convent school, then a faith school and later derelict for around ten years. It is now a secondary school and sixth form. The new project involved a combination of different construction elements. These included the refurbishment of historic buildings, which is a Grade II listed manor house and the former servants’ quarters.
The new buildings have been designed to fit in with the history of the existing structures. The new buildings include large areas of brickwork and portrait windows, with brick detailing around entrance. They will also link to Place House on two storeys and will consist of a teaching block and a sports hub with community access. Part of the project also included the demolition of other sections which had fallen into disrepair.
The new school will be able to accommodate 840 students when the project is completed. As part of the construction phase, Billington Structures provided the structural steel frame for Bowmer and Kirkland. This will consist of a beam and column braced teaching block and a separate sports hall.
Construction was temporarily interrupted by the global pandemic, but the contractors found ways to keep the project moving forward during lockdown. The executive headteacher was extremely grateful for the team at Bowmer and Kirkland for their dedication to the project.
In the latter stages of the project Ealing Fields was visited by the Prime Minister who toured the new teaching block, which includes a café and science laboratories.
