Billington Structures has provided over 1,000 tonnes of structural steel for the London School of Economics.
Billington Structures has provided over 1,000 tonnes of fire-protected structural steel for a new state-of-the-art academic facility for London School of Economics (LSE).
The building is built in two sections, 6-storey and 13-storey structures interlinked by an atrium. Situated just south of Lincoln Inn Fields, the Central Building Redevelopment (CBR) project replaces four previous buildings that were demolished.
As per the client’s requirements, the steel frames were built to be exposed which was essential to aesthetically compliment the building and bring ventilation advantages. This posed many challenges, as Billington also had to devise a bespoke hidden connection design, with many of the steel members having an internal bolted connection, hidden from view and accessed via a hatch.
Collaboration has been key throughout this build due to the confined inner-city site and complexity of the requirements, which has contributed to the success of the project.
