Saracens Rugby Club, London
Rayner Rowan Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the redevelopment of the West Stand for Saracens Rugby Club in London.
The £23m project involves the demolition of the existing stand, as well as the design and construction of the new West Stand which will be capable of accommodating 2,946 spectators. It will also include a centre of excellence for Middlesex University’s London Sport Institute and Health Faculty. The dedicated education centre, operated by Saracens Sport Foundation, will offer improved training, medical and competition facilities for athletics, rugby and community sport. The development will also include a community garden designed by local school children and a brand new media facility.
The new West Stand will be fully accessible and provide weatherproof facilities for the spectators. It will match the club’s East Stand in size and increase the ground’s capacity to 10,500. Billington Structures was responsible for the structural steelwork for the main building and contributed a number of elements to the new West Stand.
We designed, fabricated and erected the primary structural steelwork which supports the stand. In addition we coordinated and installed precast concrete elements which are integral to the terrace and the concourse levels. Miscellaneous steelwork features were also delivered which included staircases, platforms and structural supports throughout the stand.
One of the challenges for this project is that Saracens continued to train and play games at Allianz Park during the building phase of this project. This required high precision and safe working practises on site from all contractors to deliver the construction project on time.
The West Stand development demonstrates the club’s continue commitment to its teams, but also to provide a modern home for fans and the extended community who will benefit from the jobs created in the area.
