Telehouse Europe

Telehouse Europe is set to expand its data centre campus in the London Docklands with the construction of a new administration building. The new building will include a centralised control area, comprising of new adjacent building and security control rooms, as well as a service desk to support customers. The new development will significantly enhance services for its Docklands-based clients by providing an end-to-end space with reliable, secure, and flexible colocation.

The high quality office space is designed to meet BREEAM Excellent rating and it will provide Telehouse operations employees with modern workspace, meeting rooms, and a cafeteria for customers and staff. The five storey steel-framed building will have office spaces on the first four floors and the fifth level will be used to house the plant room. Sustainability features of the new building will include a brown roof with solar panels to generate electricity.

One of the construction challenges on this project is the location, as it is surrounded by a number of existing buildings. Apart from a concrete ground floor slab, the new building’s upper storeys and its roof are all made with steel beams supporting metal decking to create a composite solution.

The choice of steelwork helped with the speed of construction and logistics, as there was little or no room for storage on site. Billington Structures supplied 310 tonnes of structural steelwork for the new Telehouse administration building. The fabricated steelwork was delivered to site in manageable loads that were then erected on site with a tower crane.

A link footbridge connected the previous building to adjacent buildings and it was partially left in place, so that once the new Telehouse administration building is complete, it can be reconnected. The new building will enhance Telehouse’s presence in the London data centre market and allow them to enhance service delivery to its clients.
