5 Wellington Place is a 7 storey office block on the junction of Northern Street and Whitehall Road, and once complete it will establish the building as a striking landmark. 5 Wellington Place will offer 75,000 square feet of grade A office space over five storeys with retail space. Modern, open-plan spaces offer flexible and intelligent working environments, while floor to-ceiling glazing inspires a light unconfined space.
The project is funded by a joint venture between Hermes Investment Management and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and is being developed by MEPC.
The engineer on both 5 and 6 Wellington Place is ARUP and the main contractor was Shepherd Construction. Billington Structures supplied the structural steelwork for both buildings on this phase of the Wellington Place project.
Unit 6 Wellington Place is a 6-storey structure with a basement car park. The structure is wedge shaped in profile, with four elevations. From the widest south facing elevation, the building tapers down to the narrowest northern façade. The roof slopes down from the southern façade and conceals a plant deck, while the rooftop of the narrowest part of the wedge accommodates an outdoor terrace for the upper offices. Cellular steel beams were used throughout the building to make the frame lighter and more cost-effective.
With Unit 6, Shepherd Construction completed the early works, digging out the basement car park, constructing the concrete retaining walls and installing CFA piled foundations, ahead of Billington erecting the steel framework. In addition to erecting 700 tonnes of steelwork, Billington Structures also installed 3,000 LM of Easi-Edge safety barriers and 14,000m2 of metal decking.
