Aldi Distribution Centre

LONG EATON

A new Aldi distribution centre at Sawley Crosswords, near Toton, is set to bring 1,000 jobs to the area. Billington Structures provided the steel portal framed warehouse building with two-storey offices, and other outbuildings including the recycling area. In addition, there will be around 300 car parking spaces, provided for staff and visitors coming to the regional office.

The development on the 100 acre site  includes a 409,000 square foot ambient warehouse and a 150,000 square foot temperature-controlled area, with 15 loading bays dedicated to this controlled environment. The distribution centre, which includes a regional office, is very close to local motorways making it an ideal location.

The centre will serve existing and any planned new stores throughout the Midlands region. Over the last few years’ the discount supermarket has opened a number of new stores across Nottinghamshire.

Initially the distribution centre is expected to create around 400 jobs for the first few years of operation. However, it is expected that the number of jobs could rise to as many as 1,000 positions. This distribution centre is the 11th in the UK for Aldi and it will initially serve 80 stories across the East Midlands region. It forms part of Aldi’s planned £1bn investment in new stores, store upgrades and improving its distribution capabilities.

The cost of living crisis and rising inflation costs have changed the way people are shopping in the UK. Aldi has become one of the fastest growing supermarkets in the country with rising profits as people seek more cost effective alternatives to the traditional supermarket. It recently overtook Morrisons to become the fourth largest supermarket in the UK with a 10.1% market share. Aldi operates over 1,000 UK stores and it expects to open a number of new stores in the coming years, creating thousands of new jobs.
