The Barberry development is the first phase of a multi-million pound business park in Avonmouth. This is the final industrial phase of the 350 acre park which already has several occupiers from large businesses including The Range, DHL, Amazon, Lidl and Farmfoods.
The Barberry development is expected to bring 700 new jobs to Bristol and Billington Structures designed, fabricated and supplied more than 580 tonnes of structural steel for the project. This is for 556,000 square feet of industrial warehousing space across five portal-framed steel structures.
The largest warehouse measures 76.5m-long x 64.2m-wide and is formed by a series of 38.25m-long rafters arranged in pairs with a bolted splice connecting to a central ridge beam. The smallest is a 45m-long x 25m-wide single bay portal-framed structure. All five units feature internal mezzanine floors and office spaces.
According to the Office of National Statistics, the growth in demand for warehousing and logistics centres is in part driven by the rise of online shopping. As a result, the number of business premises for transport, warehousing and logistics in the UK has nearly doubled over the last decade. In turn, couriers and haulage companies have also seen an increase in business. Other factors that led to a rise in online shopping are due to the UK leaving the EU and the global pandemic.
The Barberry development project is a significant industrial warehousing space for the Bristol region, and it is expected to be in high demand as such large spaces are in short supply. It is also expected to complement the existing buildings on the park and will bring in around 700 construction jobs to the area. It is expected that this development will attract even more major brands to the area, who will undoubtedly benefit from having large warehousing spaces available with good transportation links.
