Barnsley College

BARNSLEY

Barnsley College and Construction Centre are two new buildings that will be created on the college’s Honeywell campus in the heart of the Yorkshire town. Awarded to BAM Construction the sixth form college will be a four storey building that will house a mixture of classrooms and lecture theatres. It is being built on an empty site that was previously home to shops and the council library which has been relocated elsewhere in the town.

The two storey Construction Centre will allow pupils to learn and practise traditional construction trades such as brickwork, plumbing and decorating, as well as new green technology skills. Billington Structures delivered 400 tonnes of structural steelwork for both the college sixth forth centre and the construction centre.

The Construction Centre is particularly important to both BAM Construction and Billington Structures as it will provide pupils with state of the art facilities with practical lessons and demonstrations. This will allow them to gain a better understanding of the construction industry as well as getting some hands on experience.

BAM Construction and Billington Structures are keen to support local construction apprenticeships. A local student, studying for a level 3 apprenticeship in construction was part of the BAM Construction team over the summer.

The Construction Centre, also known as The CUBE, houses innovative and inspiring work areas with industry-led equipment, providing a high quality learning experience for pupils. Facilities include workshops, classrooms with an IT network that is supported by industry standard software, a project workshop for new construction technologies, and break-out areas allowing students to work independently.

Both buildings on this project are aiming for an Excellent BREEAM rating as they will feature air source heat pumps and photovoltaic cells on the roof for generating electricity.
