Harris Academy, Wimbledon
Harris Academy, Wimbledon
Harris Academy in Wimbledon is being built to replace the existing academy and when construction is complete it will accommodate 900 secondary pupils and 250 sixth form pupils. This school is part of the Harris Federation, a not for profit charity which has 44 academies around London and the M25 corridor.
The new academy has a five-storey beam and column braced teaching block with integrated sports hall. This has been compactly designed with innovative features to maximise space onsite. As a steel fabricator, Billington Structures supplied over £1m of structural steelwork for the project to the main contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland.
Facilities at our new site include nine state-of-the-art science labs, music rooms, art and photography studios (including a dark room), fully equipped media, business and ICT suites as well as a sports hall and activity studio. The key communal facilities, such as the dining area, halls, drama studio and design and technology rooms, will be on the ground floor, while science, English and maths will each be taught on different floors.
The architects designed the building to follow the footprint of the irregular shaped piece of land, tailoring the building to make the most of the space available.
