Morrisons Supermarket

MORPETH

The Morrisons Supermarket in Morpeth will be relocating to a new state-of-the-art 50,000 square feet store in Low Stanners, on a site that is being redeveloped by Dransfield Properties. The new development will be larger than the existing store, enabling Morrisons to offer its customers a greater range of fresh food as well as a modern layout and design. This project is just one of many that will help to regenerate the town and improve retail in the area.

Staff from the existing store will be able to transfer over to the new Morrisons when it opens and the larger development will also create a number of new jobs in the local area for residents. The main contractor on the construction project, Tolent, requested that Billington Structures provide a design and build steelwork package for the new Morrisons supermarket. We provided the design, fabrication and erection of the two storey new retail building, which is in the region of 800 tonnes of structural steelwork.

The scope of work also included ground floor and first floor mezzanines, Cellform rafters and spine beams, and a single-storey external car park with plain long span beams. In addition to the new Morrisons supermarket the development will also include 283 short stay car parking spaces as well as 296 lower level long stay spaces. Good pedestrian links to the town centre are an important part of the development and they will be built into the landscaping of the development site.
