Sainsbury’s Bicester
The Sainsbury’s Bicester development in the town centre will not only provide a new Sainsbury’s supermarket but also a number of retail units and improved transport amenities. The main contractor on the project is Bowmer & Kirkland and they have been working closely with Cherwell District Council on the £70m redevelopment that will create exciting new retail opportunities and encourage more people to visit the town centre.
The new Sainsbury’s will only be one part of this large transformative project and it will also include a modern seven screen cinema, a range of retail and restaurants, a new bus interchange and improved town centre car parking. The development will also make provisions for a new landmark civic building and there will be 526 space car park, split over two levels. A new cinema has been a missing piece of the retail puzzle in Bicester. Residents will no longer have to travel away from town to see the latest films and nearby restaurants will benefit from the increased footfall and night-time traffic.
During the construction phase the project is expected to create 200 jobs and once it is completed approximately 600 across the different businesses. Billington Structures supplied Bowmer and Kirkland with 1,500 tonnes of structural steel to three blocks on this project which include the Sainsbury’s superstore, car parks, underground cinema and the retail units.
