University of Leicester, Teaching and Learning Centre
Opening in autumn 2022, Freemen’s Campus will provide a vibrant community for students, staff and local residents to enjoy and experience.
At the heart of Freemen’s Campus will be a new 9,000 metres square Teaching and Learning Centre, with state-of-the-art lecture theatres, inspirational teaching rooms and study areas. Students can also take advantage of a high-tech games area, cinema suite, café and open spaces.
The project is part of a wider £200m regeneration scheme which also includes new student accommodation, the refurbishment of a grade II listed building and the construction of a 500-space multi-storey car park. The accommodation includes seven blocks to house 1,164 students on the campus.
The main feature of the project is the 80 tonne mega truss and the cantilevered steel above to form the theatre. The truss was propped and jacked to allow for the the steelwork over the theatre to be completed.
The build sequence also had to be carefully considered to allow for the installation of the precast planks.
Billington Structures were delighted to be supplying structural steel for such a prestigious university project on behalf of the main contractor Engie.
