Aldi Regional Distribution Centre, Cardiff
Aldi Regional Distribution Centre, Cardiff
Aldi is set to open a new regional distribution Centre in Cardiff. This is part of the retailer’s plans to invest £109 million in the UK over the next 12 months building the new distribution centre and a number of new stores. Indications are that the retailer has plans for 33 new stores and construction will start in the next 12 months.
The £59 million Aldi Regional Distribution Centre in Cardiff is expected to create 400 jobs. It will also have regional offices and will be based at the Capital Business Park in Wentloog. DSP Construction Management was the main contractor on the project and they asked Billington Structures to supply the structural steelwork for the distribution centre.
The 40,000 square metres distribution centre consists of a 3,000 square metres of office space over two floors, 250 car parking spaces, loading bays, gatehouse and access roads. The new centre provides a hub for storage, delivery and distribution of chilled, frozen and ambient products to its stores. It is also expected that the Cardiff regional centre will serve between 110 and 130 supermarkets.
In addition to jobs at the Cardiff Distribution centre, it is expected that around 400 more jobs could be created as the company opens new stores across south Wales. Aldi is the UK’s fifth largest supermarket with more than 700 stores and 29,000 employees.
The new Aldi Regional Distribution Centre in Cardiff is a mark of confidence in the Welsh economy and it shows that South Wales and the south west of England will continue to be an area of significant growth for Aldi in the future. The new centre will support Aldi’s immediate and future expansion plans across the region.
