Billington Structures delivered structural steelwork for a major data centre in Finland, transforming a former paper mill into modern digital infrastructure.
This data centre in Finland, involved the transformation of a former paper manufacturing facility into a major data centre development. Repurposing existing industrial infrastructure presented unique engineering and logistical challenges, requiring the integration of new structural steelwork within the established facility while supporting the creation of a highly resilient digital infrastructure asset.
Billington Structures was appointed as the structural steelwork supplier following difficulties experienced by a previous steelwork contractor. Joining the scheme at a late stage, the team worked closely with the main contractor to recover programme delays and deliver the remaining works within an extremely challenging timeframe.
Billington Structures supported multiple phases of the development between 2013 and 2014, delivering a range of structural steelwork packages as the facility continued to expand. The scope included structural steelwork, metal decking, precast flooring, suspended ceiling support structures, fire protection systems, staircases and handrails, together with specialist steelwork supporting the ongoing growth of the campus.
Extensive coordination was required throughout the project to ensure the successful integration of new steelwork within the existing industrial structure while maintaining programme certainty and quality standards. Despite the compressed programme and the complexities associated with taking over a partially completed project, Billington successfully recovered significant lost time and completed the works just two days beyond the original completion target.
Delivered in partnership with an international project team, the scheme further demonstrated Billington Structures' capability to execute complex structural steel projects beyond the UK, supporting major developments in both domestic and European markets. The completed facility transformed a redundant industrial site into a modern data centre, extending the life of existing infrastructure while supporting the continued growth of digital services across Europe.
The data centre in Finland, highlighted Billington Structures' ability to integrate into complex international project teams, adapt to challenging programme requirements and deliver high-quality structural steelwork solutions for technically demanding developments within the global data centre sector.
