Billington Structures delivered structural steelwork for a major data centre in Belgium, supplying over 7,000 tonnes across a complex campus.
Located in Belgium, this major data centre development represented a significant investment in European digital infrastructure. Designed to support large-scale data processing and storage requirements, the facility incorporated a range of sustainable technologies, including an innovative cooling system utilising water from a nearby canal and on-site renewable energy generation. This helped support the creation of a resilient, future-ready digital infrastructure asset.
Billington Structures was appointed to deliver the structural steelwork package for the project, supplying and fabricating more than 7,000 tonnes of structural steelwork across a number of key structures that formed the wider campus. The scope extended beyond the main data centre building and included a Central Utility Building, pipe racks, cooling tower structures, fuelling infrastructure, pump house facilities and substation cable support structures, demonstrating the breadth of Billington's involvement across the development.
The main data centre building accounted for more than 5,500 tonnes of structural steelwork, supported by a further 800 tonnes within the Central Utility Building and additional steelwork packages associated with the site's operational and infrastructure requirements. Careful coordination of fabrication, logistics and delivery was required throughout the project to maintain programme requirements and ensure the timely supply of steelwork to site.
In addition to the primary structural steel package, Billington delivered connection design, metal decking and off-site intumescent coatings providing up to two hours of fire resistance. The wider Billington Group also contributed specialist access and safety solutions, with Easi-Edge providing edge protection systems and Peter Marshall Steel Stairs designing, supplying and installing staircases, balustrades, cat ladders and plant access platforms throughout the development.
This data centre in Belgium demonstrated Billington Structures' capability to successfully deliver large-scale and technically demanding data centre developments. The successful delivery of multiple steelwork packages across a complex campus environment further reinforced the company's ability to support major infrastructure projects throughout the UK and Europe.
