The Derby Multi-Sports arena based in Derbyshire has been short-listed for the Structural Steel Design Awards 2015.
Derby’s iconic multi-sports arena is a key legacy project that draws on sporting enthusiasm following the 2012 Olympics. The first new-build velodrome constructed in England since the London Olympics, the iconic 14,500m2 building, located next to Pride Park Football Stadium, features a 250m Siberian timber Olympic sized velodrome track.
Construction work began in May 2013. Working on behalf of main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland, Billington Structures were responsible for the overall design, fabrication and erection of the structural steelwork. Arup, as engineers, were responsible for the initial concept design during development phase (up until stage D) and Billington produced the detailed steelwork design for the project. The arena opened earlier this year.
The entire design team involved will receive recognition for the structure should this design win the Structural Steel Design Award at this year’s event in July.
