Billington Structures has more than 20 years’ experience delivering structural steelwork for data centre developments across the UK and Europe.

Billingtons’ specialist knowledge and expertise has given us a detailed understanding of the engineering, coordination and programme requirements needed to deliver structural steelwork for projects ranging from bespoke facilities through to hyperscale campuses.

This long history of successful delivery has provided detailed insight into the technical and logistical challenges that make data centre projects unlike most other forms of development.

Billington Structures collaborates with clients and project teams from an early stage to identify practical engineering solutions.  This includes reviewing structural engineering designs, identifying opportunities for value engineering and helping to reduce delivery risk before steel fabrication begins.

One area where early engineering input adds significant value is tertiary steelwork. Supporting steelwork for cable containment, plant, access systems and specialist equipment is often developed as projects progress. By identifying these requirements early and incorporating connection points into the primary frame where possible, we help reduce clashes, avoid later modifications and maintain programme continuity.

Our experience has also demonstrated the importance of responding quickly when projects encounter unforeseen challenges. At the Finland Data Centre, Billington Structures was appointed after the original steelwork contractor failed to meet the clients’ requirements. Working within an already challenging programme, the team mobilised quickly to complete the structural steelwork package, helping recover much of the lost programme and finishing just two days beyond the client’s original completion target.

Every project presents different engineering challenges. The Belgium Data Centre demonstrated our ability to deliver structural steelwork across a major multi-building campus, while the Hayes Data Centre highlighted the value of early engineering involvement and design optimisation to improve buildability and reduce project costs. At the Hemel Hempstead Data Centre, our continued involvement across multiple phases demonstrates our ability to support the ongoing expansion of operational facilities while building long-term client relationships.

Through the wider Billington Group, clients can also access complementary services including metal decking, protective coatings, steel stairs and edge protection systems. Delivering these packages through businesses that regularly work together provides clients with a coordinated approach, helping simplify project interfaces, reduce coordination requirements and support efficient delivery.

Successful data centre projects require more than steel fabrication. They depend on engineering expertise, early collaboration, reliable delivery and the ability to respond to changing project requirements. With more than two decades of experience across projects throughout the UK and Europe, Billington Structures continues to support the successful delivery of critical data centre infrastructure.
