Billington Structures, in collaboration with VINCI Construction UK, recently welcomed students from Sheffield College to its Wombwell and Shafton facilities as part of a student engagement initiative linked to a major project in Sheffield.

The visit provided students with first-hand insight into the structural steelwork industry, showcasing the processes involved in delivering large-scale construction projects and highlighting the diverse career opportunities available within the sector.

The day began with presentations from Production Director Jon Wright and Design Engineer Tiago Simoes, who outlined the scale and complexity of projects delivered across the business. The sessions covered key aspects of structural steelwork, including design, fabrication, project coordination and installation, while also highlighting the technical and operational challenges involved in delivering complex steelwork projects.

Following the presentations, the students were taken on guided tours of Billington Structures’ Wombwell production facility before visiting the Shafton site. During the visit, students observed live fabrication activities and gained an understanding of how structural steelwork projects progress from design through to fabrication and installation.

The visit generated strong engagement from the students, with particular interest shown in the company’s apprenticeship programme and the opportunities available within the wider construction and engineering sectors.

It is important for us to engage with students and help provide a better understanding of the opportunities available within the structural steelwork industry. Visits like this allow young people to see the scale and variety of work involved, whilst also demonstrating the long-term career paths available across the business.

Student engagement continues to be an important focus for Billington Structures, with the company hosting open days for local schools and colleges. These events include insights from current apprentices and long-serving employees, including our Commercial Manager, Steve Brown, who began his career with the company as a welding apprentice before progressing through the business over several decades.

By working closely with education providers and project partners, Billington Structures continues to support skills development across the industry whilst encouraging the next generation to consider careers in engineering, fabrication and construction. To find out more about current vacancies, apprenticeships and career opportunities at Billington Structures, please visit our careers portal here.
