Construction Is Under-Way On New Aircraft Hangar Billington Structures

Billington Structures have been chosen as steelwork providers in the construction of a new aircraft hangar at RAF Brize Norton. Alongside main contractors Balfour Beatty, Billington will work on Phase 3 of the project which on completion will use 3,000 tonne of steel and span an impressive 24,000 square metres.

The three-bay hangar will be home to the new fleet of Airbus A400 Atlas, which will be operated by 70 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton. Within the hangar the build will also include a three-story office block, engine and tyre bays, and an aircraft ground equipment store.

Work on site began with the help of two 168-tonne crawler cranes to lift the first of the 90-tonne, 10m-deep primary trusses into place. Phase three is due for completion in May 2016 with the hangar anticipating the arrival of its first aircrafts in summer 2016.
