Billington Structures inspires at Outwood Academy Careers Day

As a company, Billington Structures welcomes opportunities to inspire the next generation. Recently, we had the opportunity to attend a careers day at Outwood Academy’s Carlton School, where we were able to engage with their Year 11 students about the different career paths available in the steel industry.

At our stand, we spoke to the students about their future aspirations and whether working in the steel industry might be the right path for them.

One of the highlights of the day was being able to use real-life examples to demonstrate how ideas in engineering are translated into tangible solutions through tasks we set for the students to learn about the design and structural processes in the steel industry.

We also took the opportunity to discuss the different career paths in engineering and emphasised the importance of creativity, problem-solving and collaboration.

As a company, we are committed to social values, community engagement and education. Participating in events such as the Outwood Academy career day is in line with our values and our mission.

Claire Upperdine, Associated Director – HR, said of the day: “Our experience at Outwood Academy Carlton’s Careers Day was incredibly rewarding and we are grateful for the opportunity to inspire the next generation of engineers. As we continue on our journey to engineering excellence, we remain committed to nurturing students’ curiosity, creativity and ambition.”

Nicole Byrne-Martin, Teacher of English at Outwood Academy Carlton, expressed her appreciation for the involvement of Billington Structures in both the Work Ready Wednesday session and the Careers Fair. She remarked, ‘The session was a success, with a significant turnout of 10 pupils from Year 8 and Year 10, demonstrating remarkable understanding of the tasks, particularly in interpreting the GAs. Your effort in exposing them to aspects beyond the typical school curriculum, such as engineering careers, is truly appreciated.’ Additionally, she highlighted the positive feedback received from both staff and students regarding the Careers Fair, emphasising its diverse stalls and engaging activities. Byrne-Martin concluded by thanking Billington Structures for their generous contribution and commitment to enriching experiences for the students.”
