Billington Structures is delighted to announce a recent win with the UK Tekla Awards 2024. Their Skelton Grange EfW project was the overall winner in the ‘Industrial Projects’ category.
Judges’ comments included; “Strategic planning of erection to suit the process, planning of lifts and heavy coordination with Trimble Connect make this an impressive project. Clash detection was used meticulously when working with other trades, and specifically mentioned using the model and various colours to convey complex situations was very impressive. Assembled rafters on the floor and lifted fully into place – even included suspended services. From images, you can see they even lifted 3 rafters at a time. Great work!”
Skelton Grange, located in South Leeds, West Yorkshire, is an important addition to the UK’s waste management infrastructure. The combined heat and power plant is designed to process 410,000 tonnes of residual waste per year and generates 49 MW (gross) of electricity. Once fully operational, it will provide renewable baseload electricity for over 100,000 UK homes.
This EfW facility will provide crucial sustainable solutions for waste treatment and divert non-recyclable waste from landfills. It is also expected to create numerous jobs in West Yorkshire and support the region’s net zero target by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting carbon emissions. The project is in line with UK targets to minimize landfill waste and improve material recovery through recycling. Skelton Grange is Hitachi Zosen Inova’s (HZI) 14th EfW project in partnership with SSE and Wheelabrator Technologies.
Billington Structures served as the project’s steelwork contractor, fabricating and supplying 3,000 tonnes of structural steelwork. The company was responsible for erecting circa 60% of the structural steelwork, while the other 40% was supplied to other contractors to install alongside the facility’s process equipment. The facility is expected to be completed in 2025.
Their responsibility included the supply and installation of metalwork and secondary steelwork (through Peter Marshall Steel Stairs), plate girders (through Shafton Steel Services), and fire protection/intumescent coatings (Specialist Protective Coatings). Additionally, they provided metal decking, crane beams, isolation packs, mesh floor panels and edge protection barriers (from Easi-Edge).
With the sheer size of this project, we made extensive use of our design team’s expertise, from developing lifting equipment that was specifically tailored to the project, to creating models that supported the entire supply chain and its future requirements.
“We are delighted to announce that we have won the award for ‘Industrial Projects’ as part of the UK Tekla Awards 2024. This is not only fantastic news for the whole project team involved with Skelton Grange EfW, but it is also a testament to the dedication of our team at Billington Structures on this project, from design, fabrication and project management on site.
“This achievement highlights the collaborative work across the Group from Billington Structures, Peter Marshalls Steel Stair, Shafton Steel Services, Specialist Protective Coatings and Easi-Edge.”
“Congratulations to everyone on the team.” Mark Smith, CEO, Billington Holdings.
