Delivering Structural Steelwork for the Energy Sector
The energy sector places unique demands on structural steelwork because the structure is designed around the process rather than the building itself. The boilers, flues, conveyors, waste bunkers, heavy-duty gantry cranes and extensive mechanical services all influence the structural design, creating engineering challenges unlike almost any other form of construction.
Billington Structures has delivered structural steelwork across a wide range of energy projects, including Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre, Rivenhall Energy from Waste, Westfield Energy Recovery Facility, Newhurst and Earls Gate Energy from Waste Facilities. This breadth of experience has developed extensive expertise in delivering structural steelwork that supports complex process equipment and demanding operational requirements.
The North London Heat and Power Project is one of the largest and most technically demanding energy infrastructure projects currently being delivered in the world. Billington Strucures are delivering the structural steelwork package, which includes a 60-metre mega truss, fabricated in 10-metre sections before being transported and assembled on site, together with a modular stack structure that required detailed coordination throughout fabrication and installation.
Skelton Grange Energy from Waste Facility further demonstrates our experience in delivering structural steelwork for complex process buildings. The 3,000-tonne steelwork package created large column-free operational areas while supporting continuous overhead crane operation, heavy process equipment and modular roof construction within an ambitious construction programme.
The Greenwich Peninsula Energy Centre championed our ability to solve complex engineering challenges. Working with the project team, Billington Structures developed an alternative temporary stability solution for the landmark flue tower, allowing the architecturally distinctive structure to be erected safely while maintaining the original design intent. The completed facility now forms part of one of Europe’s largest district heating networks, highlighting the value of practical engineering expertise in delivering complex energy infrastructure.
From Energy from Waste facilities and energy centres to district heating schemes and power generation projects, Billington Structures delivers structural steelwork across the energy sector. Supported by extensive steel fabrication and steelwork installation expertise, we continue to deliver complex energy infrastructure throughout the UK.
