Billington Structures Wins at the European Steel Design Awards 2026
Billington Structures has won the Laureate Award at the European Steel Design Awards (ESDA) 2026 for its work on the Skelton Grange Energy from Waste Facility.
The award was announced during EUROSTEEL 2026 in Cracow on 16 September. The European Steel Design Awards recognise outstanding steel construction projects from across Europe, with Skelton Grange selected from 10 nominated projects.
In its assessment, the ESDA jury recognised the engineering expertise, digital coordination and construction excellence involved in delivering 3,000 tonnes of structural steelwork across seven complex buildings within a 41-week programme. The jury highlighted several features of the steelwork, including a 50-metre crane-support mega-truss, fatigue-resistant structures designed for continuous operation and perforated arch girders spanning the full width of the waste bunker.
The architectural quality of the facility also stood out to the jury. The jury highlighted its distinctive double-curved roof form, which reduces the visual scale of the building, and the contribution of the steel structure to the facility’s architectural identity.
The award follows the project’s success at the UK Tekla Awards 2024, where Skelton Grange was named the overall winner in the Industrial Projects Category.
Billington Structures was appointed as the structural steelwork contractor for the project, fabricating and supplying approximately 3,000 tonnes of structural steelwork. Around 60% of the steelwork was erected by Billington Structures, with the remaining steel supplied for installation alongside the facility’s process equipment. The scale and complexity of the project required close coordination throughout the design, fabrication and installation stages.
